the project begins with an understanding of the urban flip, architectural space that can mechanically or metaphorically transform from something into something else. how can the flip transform the space around the car as well as provide functions and programmatic elements for the car that do no exist within its scope? by researching american car culture, the most intriguing notion that arose was the growing number of varying uses for cars. from bellini’s kar-a-sutra, a car filled with pillows, to the airstream, a wheeled house, to ant farm’s cadillac ranch, an art piece, the car is not just a car, but also a bedroom, and office, a theatre.

car culture carpark(2007) contains a technologically integrated ceiling/floor plate that works in a similar fashion to a swiss army knife. its components drop out of the ceiling and rise from the floor in the user’s parking spot, as well as in the parking spot adjacent to the user’s car. every bay contains a record player, a pair of speakers, and a projector and screen for single user use, as well as a pool table and a table tennis table for multi-user use. four parking spots share a bar and mirror ball, also for multi-user use.
